A ROMAN FRAGMENTARY CARVED MARBLE FIGURE OF SILENUS 1ST- 2ND CENTURY AD Depicted wearing animal skin and with wineskin under his left arm, now set with metal pins to a variegate brown marble base figure 19cm high, 27.5cm high overall, base 8.3cm wide Provenance; Purchased at auction by the current vendor circa 2014 . The saleroom relayed information from the vendor that it had been brought back by her father from North Africa after World War II.The figure was inspected at The Ashmolean Museum who confirmed the likely age and subject matter and made comparison with examples held at the San Antonio Museum of Art in Texas (gift of Gilbert M Denman Jr) and another larger example in Istanbul. Another comparative example is in the National Archaeological Museum in Naples. As per cataloguing- this a fragmentary piece. Incomplete and with losses throughout. Staining to surface and wear- later drilled and with pins to base for mounting.
