1878 $2 1/2 MS65+ NGC. Mintages of gold coins at Philadelphia increased in 1878, in anticipation that paper money would trade at par with gold, and gold coin would return to Eastern commerce. The 1878 is more available than preceding dates in Mint State, but Gems are rare. This lustrous and well-struck yellow-gold example exhibits a smooth cheek and only minor field contact. Census: 36 in 65 (3 in 65+), 12 finer (11/23).
