Roman Gold Ring with Standing Female Gemstone

4th-5th century AD. A gold ring with clasped hands motif to the inside of the hoop, beast heads supporting a large oval bezel with raised rim, a tall carnelian cabochon with intaglio image of a standing robed female. Ex Abelita family collection, 1970s-2000s. The ring has a good parallel with a complete gold ring with a large raised bezel set with a glass gem found near Silchester. The expanded shoulders have simple stylised small masks, as in the example of the Silchester ring, the bezel is a slightly octangular oval in plan, with projecting ribs at the angles. Very fine condition. A large wearable size.
