Roman Gold Ring with Standing Female Gemstone
4th-5th century AD. A gold ring with clasped hands motif to the inside of the hoop, beast heads supporting a large oval bezel with raised rim, a tall carnelian cabochon with intaglio image of a standing robed female. See Fulford, M.G., Burnett, A., Henig, M. and Johns, C., 'A Hoard of Late Roman Rings and Silver Coins from Silchester, Hampshire,' in Britannia, 20, pp. 219-228.6.25 grams, 26.80mm overall, 20.44mm internal diameter (approximate size British P 1/2, USA 7 3/4, Europe 16.86, Japan 16) (1"). Ex Abelita family collection, 1970s-2000s. The ring has a good parallel with a complete gold ring with a large raised bezel set with a glass gem found near Silchester. The expanded shoulders have simple stylised small masks, as in the example of the Silchester ring, the bezel is a slightly octangular oval in plan, with projecting ribs at the angles. Very fine condition. A large wearable size.
