Trajan's successful campaign against the Dacians in AD 101-102 reduced their leader Decebalus to the status of client king and large areas of territory north of the Lower Danube were annexed. The reverse of this rare aureus depicts Trajan's celebrated triumph upon his return to Rome and notes the new title of Dacicus Maximus awarded to him by the Senate.
