Fine and rare second period hoop and spike brass lantern clock, signed on the lower front heraldic fret Richard Beck at Ye French Church Londini, over a 6.3" chapter ring enclosing a foliate engraved centre with single iron hand and central engraved brass alarm dial, surmounted by three heraldic pierced frets, strapwork, bell and finial, 15.25" high (weight) (alterations)* The movement of this clock has been converted from balance wheel to verge escapement and, unusually for an English lantern, has a half hour strikeĀ ** The working life of the maker Richard Beck was limited to scarcely six years (1653-1659). He died aged 27 and only five clocks are known to have been made by him, all with balance escapements
