SARTRE Jean-Paul (1905-1980).
Autograph MANUSCRIT on Communism, [ca. 1950]; 4 pages in-4 on graph paper.
Interesting reflections on Communism, the USSR and France, the masses and the elites, diplomacy and peace.
"Here we must go over the objections [...] I know why we are hated: we can only take fellow travelers. [...] But if you open your eyes: who today does not have an infinite task. Who wants to limit himself to restoring democracy? [...] That's because we're not communists. That means 1) we're retreating from the USSR. 2) we have to forge our own methods [...] 3) we don't represent the masses, but the petty bourgeois, the proletariat elite and so on. This presupposes a bourgeois heritage. Saving values. This is not an opportunistic agreement, but rather, for a situation that may last a long time, an agreement that must not be broken. What happens next? Well, we'll change and the situation will change. What if we took power? But then the situation would have changed. If the Comm. take it alone? [...] We'll have been beaten, we'll have let ourselves be beaten. The policy to follow is clear. Resurrection of political activity in France. Return to sovereignty. [...] Peace in Indochina. Policy of wealth production. Peace. We need a majority to make it. Who is doing it today? The Communist Party. [...] They say it's for the USSR. But it's first and foremost for France. So what's the point? [...] Not to oppose the Comm. by having the same program"... Etc.
