Steve Marriott/The Blockheads: An Epiphone Frontier FT-110 Acoustic Guitar, 1959, Serial No. 66077 , with engraved Lariat and Cactus-themed pickguard, flat top with maple back and sides, sunburst finish, bound rosewood fingerboard with slotted block markers, maker's label to the interior noting style FT110 and Epiphone FRONTIER , in hardshell case with orange plush lining labelled J.T. ACOUSTIC in black marker on tape, together with accompanying letters of provenance from John Turnbull and the Managing Director of Blockheads Ltd, CITES license no.622654/01 , the guitar 41 1/2in (105.5cm) long Footnotes: Provenance: Steve Marriott (1947-1991), (guitar, Small Faces, Humble Pie), who sold the guitar to a London guitar dealer. Acquired by John Turnbull (guitar, The Blockheads) from Sound City, London, in 1974. Steve Marriott played this model on the Small Faces special edition of 'Colour Me Pop', performing the track 'Mad John' broadcast on BBC 2 on the 21st June 1968. This broadcast is one of just five surviving episodes of the show. He continued to perform with this model with Humble Pie, including the song 'For Your Love' for Beat-Club around 1970. Soon after purchasing the present guitar in 1974, John Turnbull returned to the Lots Road studio in Chelsea, where Steve Marriott and Ronnie Lane of the Small Faces visited on the same day. On seeing the Epiphone, Marriott recognised it as the guitar he had recently sold to a London guitar dealership and requested another jam session with it. According to Turnbull, Marriott and Lane explained that the guitar was previously used in the writing of several Small Faces tracks including 'Itchycoo Park'. Since being in Turnbull's possession the guitar's legacy has extended further, featuring on numerous Blockheads recordings and on Bob Geldof solo albums when Turnbull has featured as guitarist.
