Château Latour 1945

A COLLECTION OF RARITIES FROM THE HISTORIC CELLARS OF KING\'S COLLEGE, CAMBRIDGE

In June of this year, Christie’s Wine Department were thrilled and honoured to present an extraordinary collection of pristine Burgundy from the cellars of King’s College, Cambridge. It was an extremely focused collection, which showcased the wines of only two legendary vigneron – Henri Jayer, and Emmanuel Rouget. The results were stellar, and spoke of the timeless quality of these iconic winemakers.

As we approach our sale of Finest and Rarest Wines and Spirits on December 1st and 2nd, we are again to offer wines from King’s cellars. If anything, we are even more excited to be presenting this collection which encompasses ancient rarities and legendary vintages of post-war Bordeaux from deep in the cellars of the college.

Practically all of the wines in this sale were purchased at the time of release and have been stored in the college cellars, unmoved until they were released to Christie’s for this auction, the college wine cellar records note the purchase dates and sources.

These are wines that rarely come to market and when they do, have generally been traded liberally. Highlights from this august collection include: Latour and Lafite-Rothschild 1959, Cos d’Estournel 1961, magnificent Port in the form of 1945 Croft and a very rare lot of 1948 Taylor, and in Madeira, we are thrilled to offer magnums of Christopher and Co, Finest Reserve Sercial, bottled in magnum in 1953 to honour the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, alongside 19th century Blandy’s Verdelho and some extraordinary 19th century sherry.

This is the cellar for a collector of rarities and a unique opportunity to engage with the history of one of the world’s great institutions. We at Christie’s feel privileged to be part of these wines’ journey.
