A Tibetan gilt bronze figure of the eleven-headed Avalokiteshvara. 18th/19th century
Standing on a single lotus base, his main hands holding the wish-fulfilling jewel in front of his chest, dressed in a pleated ankle-length dhoti, adorned with jewelry festoons, the eleven faces arranged in tiers, surmounted by a jeweled tiara, at the top the head of Amitabha. Glass and hard stone inlays. Attributes missing. Base open.
Legend has it that after witnessing the misery of beings in the hell, Avalokiteshvara´s head shattered into ten pieces. Amitabha constructed ten faces from these pieces and placed a duplicate of his own head at the top.

Die reich geschmückte Figur des Bodhisattva des allumfassenden Mitleids in seiner elfköpfigen und achtarmigen Erscheinungsform. Auf einem länglichen Lotossockel stehend, in den Haupthänden das Wunschjuwel vor der Brust haltend, gekleidet in ein Schultertuch und in ein mit Perlenketten verziertes Beinkleid. Attribute verloren. Sockel geöffnet.
Der Legende nach ist Avalokiteshvaras Kopf beim Anblick der Leiden in der Hölle in zehn Stücke zersprungen, sein transzendenter Vater Amitabha habe daraufhin jedes Stück zu einem vollständigen Kopf ergänzt und sein eigenes Haupt zuoberst aufgesetzt. Die Bronze zeigt diesen Amitabha-Kopf an der Spitze der Köpfe.
