A RARE 14 BORE D.B. BELGIAN PIN-FIRE BASTIN PATENT SPORTING GUN BY JH. MONTIGNY, ARQ.ER DU ROI DES PAYS-BAS A BRUXELLES, NO. 119, CIRCA 1860 with browned twist sighted barrels signed in gold script on the rib and fitted with bead fore-sight, forward-sliding breech operated by a hinged under-lever accommodated within the fore-end and with hooked sprung catch chiselled with foliage, stamped on the inside with the number and 'Bastin Frères Brevete', chiselled tang decorated with foliage and strapwork, engraved locks chiselled en suite and decorated with differing deer vignettes, figured walnut half-stock, chequered grip and fore-end, iron trigger-guard and butt cap, vacant silver escutcheon and a pair of sling mounts 77.5 cm; 30 1/2 in barrels Bastin Frères are recorded in Hermalle sous Argentan, near Liège 1848-1881. In 1855 they registered improvements to the Montigny carbine under patent no. 2149 with subsequent improvements in 1856, no. 2365. See Daubresse 2014, vol. 1, p. 48.
